Rabbits, guinea pigs and rats are cleverer than many people think. They learn quickly, recognise routines and love investigating things with their nose and teeth. A bored rabbit will start digging into the sofa or chewing the wallpaper. With the Bark Wood puzzle you give that energy a fun direction. It is a wooden puzzle with blocks. You hide a treat underneath, and your pet has to remove the wooden blocks to find its reward. That way it uses its nose, its mouth and its brain.
The puzzle measures about 12 x 12 x 3 cm. Besides birds, Back Zoo Nature describes it as suitable for rabbits. We also find it suitable for guinea pigs and rats. Both a dwarf rabbit and a medium-sized rabbit can handle it well. The size is handy to place in the indoor hutch, in the run, in the cage or on the floor during free-roaming time. Rabbits, guinea pigs and rats are social animals and live in pairs or more. With several animals, feel free to give each its own turn with the puzzle, so the fastest one does not eat everything.
Start easy. Let your pet see you put something under a block, and leave the first block half open. If it smells the treat and finds it, praise it and try again. After a few attempts most animals understand the game. Guinea pigs are often a bit more cautious. Give them time and leave a few blocks half open at first. Rats are clever and often get the hang of it quickly. Then put all the blocks back and hide the treat better. Place the puzzle on a stable, non-slip surface so it does not slide away when your pet pushes. For example on a rug or next to the hay rack filled with fresh Zooply hay.
What do you put in it? For a rabbit, small pieces of a Zooply snack for rabbits, a few dried herbs or a pellet of its own food. For guinea pigs, dried herbs or a pellet of their own food work well. Rats are just as happy to search for a piece of their own food. Keep it small. Treats are an extra, and for rabbits and guinea pigs hay remains the most important food. Give sweet treats and fruit only very sparingly. If you use the regular food as a reward, you turn part of a meal into a game. Put the puzzle away after playing, so it stays interesting. You will find more for your pet in our guinea pigs and rats sections.
The puzzle is made of wood and your pet may gnaw on it. That is normal, because the teeth of rabbits, guinea pigs and rats keep growing throughout their lives. Check regularly for splinters or loose bits. Wipe away treat remains after use so nothing is left behind. If the puzzle is heavily gnawed or dirty, replace it with a new one.
Yes. Back Zoo Nature itself only mentions rabbits, but we also find it suitable for guinea pigs and rats. With guinea pigs, start extra easy with a few blocks half open. Rats can be challenged sooner by hiding the treat better.
Make it very easy at first with a treat that is half visible. Then build it up slowly.
Yes, that is normal. Replace the puzzle when it has been chewed down too far.
You can use it daily, as long as you keep the rewards small. You could use part of the regular food.
Wipe away leftovers and brush it clean while dry. Let it dry if it has become wet.
