Hollowed Buddha nut of approx. 10 to 12 cm. A natural hideout and decoration in the enclosure of rats, hamsters, mice and gerbils. Read more.
Rodents feel safest when they can crawl away somewhere. In the wild they look for shelter under roots, in little burrows and between stones. In an enclosure you give them that sense of safety with hideouts. This Buddha Nut XL is a special version of one. It is a hollowed nut: the edible kernel has been removed. What remains is a sturdy, natural nut shell. It gives the enclosure a natural look and serves as a hideout for your pet.
The nut measures about 10 to 12 cm. Back Zoo Nature describes it as suitable as a hiding place for rodents. Fancy mice and dwarf hamsters love to crawl right inside. Gerbils like to dig around it and use it as a burrow in the bedding. Rats and Syrian hamsters enjoy investigating the nut, gnawing on it and searching for a treat you have hidden in it. As it is a natural product, every nut varies a little in shape and size. So check that the opening is big enough for your pet.
Rodents love having several places to hide. The Buddha nut is therefore a lovely extra next to a regular hideout. Bury the nut halfway in a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters, so it lies firmly and forms a kind of burrow. A hamster or gerbil will happily dig a little tunnel towards it. Put some Zooply nesting material next to it. Mice will drag it inside and make a cosy nest.
Mice, gerbils and rats often live in a small group. In that case give them several hideouts, so they do not fight over a single spot. Combine the nut with a piece of cork, a few twigs or other natural decoration. This creates a varied landscape where your pets can climb, run and hide. With a hamster, it is best to leave the nut in a fixed spot. Hamsters do not like an enclosure that keeps changing. You will find more for your pet in our gerbils and rats sections.
A nut shell is a natural material. It is normal for your pet to gnaw on it. Check the nut now and then for sharp edges or cracks, and replace it once it has been gnawed down too far. Does your pet use the nut as a nest? Then leave the nest alone as much as possible when cleaning. Only remove dirty or wet bedding. Hamsters sometimes build up a little food store in their hideout. That is normal; only remove fresh food that could spoil.
Rats love to investigate the nut and gnaw on it. Hide a treat inside now and then, so they have something to search for.
