Rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and degus are smarter than many people think. In the wild they spend a large part of the day searching for food. In a hutch everything is ready and waiting, which leaves little to discover. The Brain Trainer Cups turns a snack into a small riddle. It is a wooden board with three compartments, each hidden under a swivel lid. Your pet has to push the lid aside with its nose or paw to reach the snack. That takes some thinking and keeps it busy.
The puzzle measures about 22.5 x 8 cm. Back Zoo Nature made it for rabbits, rodents and birds. In our shop you will find it for rabbits, guinea pigs, rats and degus, because they are the quickest to figure out how the lids work. Rats usually figure it out quickly. A rabbit or guinea pig may take a little longer, but they learn it too. For very small animals such as mice, turning the lids is more difficult.
On the bottom and back there are four rubber feet. They keep the puzzle firmly in place on the floor, so it does not slide away when your pet pushes against it. Place it on a flat surface, such as the floor of the hutch or the run. For rats you can also hang it upright on the bars using the included screw and wing nut. You can remove the screw if you prefer to stand it on the floor. Ideally, use the puzzle while you are around. That way you can see how your pet tackles it and help if needed.
Fill the compartments with something small. For rabbits use Zooply snacks for rabbits, for guinea pigs Zooply snacks for guinea pigs. A few pellets from the daily ration work as well. Rats love a piece of Zooply snacks for rats as a reward. Back Zoo Nature also mentions dried fruit as a filling. Never give that to degus, as degus are sensitive to sugar. For them, choose the sugar-free Zooply snacks for degus or some herbs.
The puzzle is made of wood, and wood may be gnawed. That is normal. Do keep an eye on the rubber feet: they are there for stability, not for chewing. If your pet gnaws on them, take the puzzle away after playtime. Replace it when the wood is badly chewed or the lids no longer turn properly. Remove food leftovers from the compartments after use and wipe the wood clean with a dry cloth.
Start with one lid half open, so the snack can be seen and smelled. After a few tries your rabbit will learn to push the lids open itself.
Preferably not all day. Use it as an activity while you are nearby, mainly because of the rubber feet.
For rats, rabbits and guinea pigs only a very small piece now and then. Never for degus, as they must not have sugar.
Yes, on the bars with the screw and wing nut. That works well for rats. For rabbits and guinea pigs, place it on the floor.
Remove food leftovers from the compartments and wipe the wood with a dry or slightly damp cloth. Let it dry well.
