Rats are true explorers. Everything hanging in their cage gets sniffed, grabbed and tried out. Hamsters and gerbils are just as curious, they just do it more from the ground. The Corn Tower gives them all something to work on. It is a hanger made of natural parts: pieces of corn cob, slices of coconut shell, sisal rope and calcium blocks. Each part is different to gnaw on. That keeps your pet exploring, even once part of it is gone.
The tower itself is about 21 cm. Including the hanger it is about 41 cm long. Back Zoo Nature describes it as suitable for rodents. In a rat cage with levels it hangs nicely between two floors. Your rats will climb over to it and hang on to reach it. Hamsters and gerbils get more out of it when the hanger is low or lies on the floor. For mice the toy is large, and for degus we prefer toys without corn cob.
In a cage with bars, hang it at a height your pet can easily reach. For rats it can be a bit higher, so they have to climb or stretch. For a hamster or gerbil, hang it just above the floor, or place it in the tank on a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters. Your pet will then dig around it and tug at it. Do not hang it so low that it ends up in the nest or the toilet corner.
Want to make it even more interesting for your rats? Wedge a piece of Zooply snacks for rats between two parts. Rats are clever and figure it out quickly, but they enjoy the challenge of searching. Rats do gain weight easily, so keep snacks as a real extra. The calcium blocks are a part of the hanger to nibble on. They do not replace a complete diet. Swap the toy with other toys now and then to keep the cage exciting.
Gnawing is the point, so the hanger will fall apart. That is normal. Pay particular attention to the sisal rope. When it frays, loose threads can form in which a foot or toe could get tangled. Cut them off, or remove the hanger if the rope comes apart too much. Also remove pieces that have become wet or dirty. Replace the Corn Tower when there is little left of it.
Between two levels, so they have to climb or stretch to reach it. Make sure they can still reach it safely.
Yes. Hang it low or place it on the floor of the tank. A hamster will then gnaw on it from the ground.
Fraying rope can create loose threads in which a foot can get tangled. Check the hanger regularly.
They are a part of the toy to nibble on. They are not a replacement for a complete diet.
Degus are sensitive to sugar. That is why we are careful with treats such as corn for them and prefer toys without corn cob.
