Every small rodent loves to build a nest. A hamster drags material to its sleeping spot, mice work together on a warm ball of shreds and gerbils tear anything they find into tiny pieces. Crinkle paper Forest Mix is perfect for this. It is crinkled, shredded paper in a mix of three colours. According to Back Zoo Nature it is untreated, without chemicals or impregnating agents, and coloured with natural dyes only.
Paper is a safe nesting material. That matters, because cotton wool and synthetic nesting fluff can form long threads that wrap around little feet. Paper does not have that problem. Put a handful near the entrance of the hideout and watch what your pet does with it. Usually it is dragged straight inside and shaped into a soft nest. Back Zoo Nature also describes the paper as suitable to play, hide and dig in.
You can also mix the paper with bedding. Scatter a few tufts over a deep layer of bedding and hide some seeds or herbs between them. Your pet will start searching and digging, just as it would in the wild. Do you have an empty toy, such as a woven ball or cardboard tube? Fill it with a tuft of paper and a few snacks. Your pet then has to pull the paper out to reach the treat. A pack contains about 100 grams. The paper is light and airy, so it lasts quite a while.
The paper is suitable for hamsters, mice, gerbils, rats and degus. Combine it with Zooply nesting material for hamsters for a nest of different materials. For rats it goes well with Zooply nesting material for rats, for example in a house or hammock. Rats have sensitive airways, so keep the enclosure clean and replace dirty paper in time.
When cleaning, remove wet or dirty paper. Leave a dry nest in place as much as possible, especially with hamsters. They often store food in it as well and dislike it when everything disappears. Only remove perishable fresh food from the store. Keep the rest of the paper dry and closed.
Yes. Rats often drag it to their favourite sleeping spot themselves, such as a house or hammock. Refresh it regularly, as rats have sensitive airways.
No, that is normal nesting behaviour. Only remove paper that is wet or dirty.
Yes, that works well. Scatter a few tufts over the bedding and hide something tasty between them.
