Put a handful of crinkled paper in an enclosure and watch what happens. Within minutes it gets sniffed, moved and pulled apart. Crinkle paper Happy Mix gives small rodents exactly that kind of activity. It is shredded paper in a mix of three cheerful colours. According to Back Zoo Nature it is untreated, without chemicals or impregnating agents, and only natural dyes have been used. The paper is low in dust. Back Zoo Nature says that small rodents love to play in it, hide in it and dig in it.
The paper suits hamsters, mice, gerbils, rats and degus. A hamster often works it into its nest. Mice in a group build a shared sleeping spot from it. Gerbils tear it into fine shreds. Rats drag it to their hammock or hideout. And degus investigate anything new in the enclosure. The bag contains about 100 grams. Because paper is light, that lasts quite a while. The Happy Mix is also available in the variants Natural, Sun Mix and Forest Mix.
Place a handful of paper next to the hideout and let your pet decide what to do with it. You can mix it with Zooply nesting material for hamsters. This creates a soft, airy nest with a touch of colour. For mice it works the same way, but put a little bit down in a few places. That way every animal can choose for itself. Never use cotton wool or synthetic nesting fluff as nesting material. Threads from it can wrap around little feet. Paper is a safe choice.
Crinkle paper is also great for playing hide and seek. Wrap a snack in a handful of paper and place it in a corner or in an empty cardboard tube. For rats you can use Zooply snacks for rats. They will search, pull and unwrap. For degus, only choose sugar-free snacks or herbs. You can also refill an empty chew toy with paper. That makes it last longer and keeps the enclosure varied.
The paper is meant to be destroyed. Remove wet or dirty paper regularly, especially from the nest or the toilet corner. Do not throw away the whole nest every time you clean. Hamsters and mice find that stressful. Only replace the part that is dirty and leave some clean, familiar material behind. Store the bag in a dry place. According to Back Zoo Nature the paper is fully recyclable.
Cotton wool and synthetic nesting fluff can form thin threads that wrap around little feet. Paper tears into pieces and is therefore a safer choice.
