Rodents love anything that rustles and that they can burrow into. Back Zoo Nature Crinkle Paper is shredded paper in curly strands. It is untreated: no chemicals or impregnating agents have been used. This is the Natural variant, with a look that is as natural as possible. You can use it in many ways. As nesting material, as enrichment on the floor, for digging and for hiding treats. A bag of about 100 grams therefore lasts a good while.
As nesting material, crinkle paper is a nice choice. Your hamster, mouse or gerbil drags the strands to its sleeping spot and builds a soft nest. Paper is a safe nesting material, without the long synthetic threads of cotton wool or nesting fluff that little feet can get tangled in. Put a handful near the hideout and let your pet decide where the nest goes. That is more fun than making the nest for it, and it is part of its natural behaviour.
Crinkle paper also works well as an addition to the bedding. Sprinkle a few handfuls over a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters and hide some food or a snack in it. Your pet will start sniffing, digging and searching. That is called foraging. For rats you can put it in a box or tray, with a few treats mixed in. Rats are clever and love a search game like this. Degus and gerbils, which like to shred everything, get straight to work. They cut it into even smaller pieces and use it for their nest.
You can also use crinkle paper to refill a toy. Stuff a handful into a chew ball, a roll or a willow tunnel and hide a treat inside. Your pet then has to work to reach the snack. Alternate the paper with other natural materials, such as hay or Zooply nesting material. That keeps the enclosure varied. For degus, only hide sugar-free snacks. For dwarf hamsters, no sweet snacks or fruit.
Crinkle paper is low in dust, and paper is a natural product that can be recycled. Remove dirty or wet paper when you clean. With hamsters, leave part of the nest in place, so your pet keeps its familiar spot and scent. Chewing on the paper is normal. It is part of the fun and nothing to worry about. Simply top it up when it runs out.
The paper is untreated, without chemicals or impregnating agents. Paper is a safe nesting material, better than synthetic cotton wool or nesting fluff.
It is better to use it as an addition to regular bedding. Sprinkle it on top for enrichment and as nesting material.
Natural has a look that is as natural as possible. The other variants are mixes of three colours, coloured with natural dyes.
It will chew and shred it, which is normal. Most pets use it for their nest and do not eat it.
That depends on how you use it. For a nest and some enrichment you only need a few handfuls at a time.
