For many people a gingerbread house is part of the holidays. This gingerbread house from Rosewood's Cupid & Comet Christmas line brings that atmosphere to your hamster's, mouse's or gerbil's enclosure. It is a wooden house shaped like a gingerbread house. The sides are pink and printed with a Christmas wreath, sweets and candy canes. The roof consists of round wooden slats with a white snow edge. There is a round entrance at the front.
For small rodents, a house is first and foremost a hiding place. Hamsters, mice and gerbils are prey animals. They want a dark, sheltered spot to sleep and keep their food store. This house gives them that, with a festive look on top. The round slatted roof also gives the house a fun texture that small animals can climb over.
The house measures 21 × 10.5 × 12 cm and weighs 180 grams. That is a nice size for mice, dwarf hamsters and gerbils. For an adult Syrian hamster the house is on the tight side at 10.5 cm wide. So with a Syrian hamster, check carefully that it can get in and out easily and turn around comfortably inside. In any case, provide at least one hiding place per animal, and preferably one extra.
Place the house on a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters, for mice or for gerbils. You can also bury it a little, so it looks as if the house is standing in the snow. Put a tuft of Zooply nesting material inside, and your pet will make a nest of it. Choose a quiet spot, not right under the water bottle, so the house stays dry.
The wood may be gnawed. That is normal behaviour. Replace the house when too much has been gnawed away or when it no longer stands firmly. When cleaning, remove dirty bedding and perishable food, but leave part of the nest and food store in place. The Christmas theme makes the house extra fun in December, but afterwards it simply remains a hiding place.
