Hanging bridge of ten wooden steps with a hollow coconut filled with coconut fibre at each end. For climbing across and crawling into. Approx. 104 cm long. Read more.
Rodents that love to climb need more in their enclosure than just a floor. The double coconut bridge gives them a route at height, with a place to crawl into at each end. Two hollow, sturdy coconuts are connected by a bridge of ten wooden steps. The steps are attached with sisal rope. Your pet climbs across the bridge to one coconut, crawls inside, and goes back over the bridge again. That turns a dull part of the cage into a place to explore.
The coconuts contain natural coconut fibre. Your pet can build a small nest with it or drag it somewhere else. That fits the natural behaviour of rodents, which are always busy with their nest. The hard coconut shell on the outside lasts a long time, even with plenty of gnawing.
Let us be honest about the size. The opening of each coconut is about 6 cm. That is plenty for mice and dwarf hamsters, which like to curl up inside. A Syrian hamster often finds the opening tight. Rats are usually too big for the coconuts, but they love using the bridge to climb across and to get from one level to another. For rats it is mainly a climbing route, for mice and dwarf hamsters it is also a hideout.
The bridge measures about 104 x 11 x 12 cm and hangs from the pear-shaped clips that come with it. A tall cage with bars works best. Hang it between two levels, or let it hang in a curve as a wobbly bridge. Do not hang it too high in a hamster cage, because hamsters are less agile climbers and fall more easily. Put a deep layer of Zooply bedding for rats or for mice underneath, so your pet lands softly when it jumps off. Extra Zooply nesting material nearby will happily be carried into the coconut.
The steps are attached with sisal rope. Check the rope regularly for loose threads, as little feet can get tangled in them. Trim any frayed bits and replace the bridge when the rope is worn or the steps come loose. Gnawing on the wood is normal. If it has been chewed down too far, replace the bridge. Remove damp or dirty coconut fibre and top up with clean nesting material.
