Wooden sand bath house with plexiglass: a fixed, sheltered spot for the sand bath of your hamster or gerbil, so less sand ends up across the enclosure. Read more.
Rolling, digging, a quick shake and off they go again: for many hamsters and gerbils, the sand bath is a fixed moment of the day. This wooden sand bath house from Duvo+ gives that behaviour its own place in the enclosure. The house is made of quality wood combined with plexiglass. Fill it with bathing sand and your pet can roll and turn in peace, sheltered from the rest of the enclosure.
A sand bath is more than a nice extra. By rolling in fine bathing sand, rodents help keep their coat clean and dry. It is natural behaviour that you do not need to teach: as soon as there is sand, most animals get started on their own. Because the house has walls, most of the sand stays inside. And thanks to the plexiglass you can watch your pet roll around.
Place the sand bath house on a flat, stable spot in the enclosure and not right under the water bottle, so the sand stays dry. Sprinkle a layer of bathing sand on the floor, just enough to roll in. Remove droppings in between with a spoon or small sieve and refresh the sand regularly. Some hamsters also use their sand bath as a toilet. That is normal behaviour; simply refresh the sand a little more often.
At 35 × 17.5 × 18.5 cm, a hamster has enough room to roll over completely. Both dwarf hamsters and Syrian hamsters can use it. Gerbils, as desert animals, also love a dry sand bath, and a pair will simply take turns. The house is also listed in our degu category. Degus enjoy a sand bath too, but they chew wood a lot, so keep a close eye on it with them.
Fill the house with Zooply bathing sand, the fine bathing sand we use ourselves for our own animals in the shop and breeding facility. Maintenance is easy. Wood may be chewed: a few chew marks are normal and part of life with a rodent. If the wood is chewed away too far or the house becomes wobbly, replace it with a new one.
Yes, at 35 cm long a Syrian hamster can roll around in it well. Dwarf hamsters have even more room. Do check that your hamster can get in and out easily; most animals discover the opening within a day.
Use fine bathing sand made especially for rodents, such as Zooply bathing sand. Do not use play sand, building sand or calcium sand. These are too coarse, too dusty or not suitable for your pet's coat.
Ideally remove droppings and dirt every day. Replace all the sand as soon as it is dirty or damp. For a hamster that uses the sand bath as a toilet, this will be more often than for an animal that only rolls in it.
Remove the sand and brush the wood and plexiglass out while dry. Above all, keep the house dry, because damp wood and damp sand are not pleasant for your pet. Make sure it is completely dry before adding fresh sand.
Yes, that is fine. Chewing is natural behaviour, and the wood of this house can take it. Replace the house once it has been chewed so far that it no longer stands firmly or no longer holds the sand.
