Many rodents prefer to sleep completely enclosed. In the wild they build a nest in a burrow or among dense vegetation. A sleeping bag recreates that feeling: soft on all sides, with just one opening. Rats and mice love to climb up to it, and a degu will happily retreat into it after a busy day too. Hanging it up also makes it a fun activity.
The sleeping bag is easy to hang in any enclosure. Do not hang it too high, especially for smaller animals, so a jump out never ends in a hard landing. For gerbils, hang it low, just above the bedding. Rats and mice can easily climb to a higher spot. Put some nesting material inside; then your pet can arrange the inside just the way it likes.
The sleeping bag measures 22.5 × 22.5 × 13 cm. An adult rat fits in well, and two small rats sometimes lie in it together. For a group of mice or a pair of gerbils it is a roomy sleeping bag. Degus can use it as well, but they chew a lot. So with degus, keep an extra close eye on whether they start on the fabric.
Plush is soft and warm, but not meant for chewing. During the first few days, check that your pet does not chew it or swallow bits of fabric, and remove the sleeping bag if you see that. Check for loose threads as well. Add safe nesting material from Zooply, for example for rats or mice. It is made of natural fibres.
Yes, one adult rat lies in it comfortably. Two young or small rats sometimes fit in together. If you have a group of rats, hang up several sleeping spots, so there is a place for everyone.
That depends on your pet. For gerbils, hang it low, because they climb less. Rats and mice can go higher, as long as they can reach it easily via a shelf or the bars. Never hang it so high that a fall could be dangerous.
Yes, that makes it even cosier. Use safe nesting material made of natural fibres, such as paper or hay. Do not use cotton wool or synthetic nesting fluff, because the threads can wrap around little feet.
Take it out of the enclosure and shake it out well. Brush off loose hair and leftover nesting material and keep the sleeping bag dry. Check straight away for any loose threads.
Then remove the sleeping bag. Degus naturally chew a lot, and bits of fabric do not belong in their stomach. A wooden hideout is often a better choice for an enthusiastic chewer.
