Hay rack made of quality wood with black metal. Keeps hay clean and together for rabbits and guinea pigs, and the wood may be chewed. Read more.
Hay is the most important thing a rabbit or guinea pig eats. It should always be available in unlimited amounts, alongside the pellets. This Duvo+ wooden hay rack helps you with that. The rack is made of quality wood combined with black metal, and looks calm and tidy in any enclosure. You fill it with hay and your pet pulls out the strands itself. That keeps the hay together and out of the urine and droppings.
Pulling out strands is exactly what your pet enjoys. Rabbits and guinea pigs spend a large part of the day eating. In the wild they graze and nibble for hours. With a full hay rack they can do the same: grab a few strands, chew and carry on. That long chewing on hay supports the natural wear of the teeth and molars, which keep growing throughout the lives of rabbits and guinea pigs. The wood also encourages the natural urge to gnaw.
Here is how to use the rack. Fill it with fresh hay every day and remove old or damp hay. Place it where your pet can reach it easily and cannot get stuck. A handy spot is right next to the litter tray, as many rabbits like to eat and pee at the same time. Vary the types of hay: a different smell and texture makes eating hay interesting again. You can also mix a few dried herbs into the hay in the rack.
At 37 cm high, there is room for a generous portion of hay. For rabbits and guinea pigs that is a good size; with a pair you will need to top it up during the day. Degus also need unlimited hay and can use this rack. Degus chew a lot of wood, so check the rack regularly with them. For all animals: the wood may be chewed. If it has been chewed away too far, replace the rack.
Fill the rack with Zooply hay for rabbits or Zooply hay for guinea pigs. Alternate between our types of hay: it keeps things exciting and many animals eat more of it.
Fill the rack with fresh hay at least once a day, and more often if it is empty. Hay should always be available without limit. Remove old, damp or dirty hay before you top it up.
Yes, that is fine. The wood encourages the natural urge to gnaw and gnawing is normal behaviour. Hay remains the most important thing for the teeth, though. Replace the rack once the wood has been chewed away too far.
One rack works for two guinea pigs, as long as you top it up in time. If you notice one guinea pig pushing the other away, add a second hay spot. An extra pile of hay on the floor works too.
Somewhere your pet can reach it easily and safely, without getting stuck. Many owners put the rack next to the litter tray, because rabbits like to eat while sitting on the toilet.
Remove leftover hay and dust and brush the rack out. Keep the wood dry. If there is wet or mouldy hay in it, remove it straight away.
