This Duvo+ wooden house Lodge is a simple, honest hideout with a sloping roof. It is made of quality wood and gives your rodent a safe place to rest, play and gnaw. Small rodents are prey animals. They feel most at ease when they can crawl under something, with a roof over their head and walls around them. A house like this gives exactly that sense of safety.
The wood is more than just building material. It encourages the natural urge to gnaw, so your pet is welcome to chew it. You will often see this at the corners and edges: that is where the first gnaw marks appear. That is not wear to worry about, it is simply use. Only once the house has been chewed away too far do you replace it.
The sloping roof makes the house practical. Place it on a deep layer of bedding and press it in a little, so it stands firmly. Your pet can then dig tunnels around and under it, just as it would in the wild. Put some nesting material inside or near the entrance. Gerbils shred anything they find into nesting material, and hamsters will drag it inside by themselves. To make the enclosure more natural, add some hay or a piece of cork next to the house as an extra hiding spot.
At 20 × 13 × 12 cm, this is a compact house. It is a nice size for dwarf hamsters, mice and gerbils. A few mice or gerbils can lie in it together. For an adult Syrian hamster it is on the small side. It prefers a roomier house to build its nest in. If in doubt, go one size up; more space is always better for a Syrian hamster.
Combine the house with Zooply bedding for gerbils, to create a thick digging layer in which tunnels hold their shape. For hamsters, Zooply nesting material for hamsters is a good addition to make the inside soft.
Yes, two gerbils fit in it nicely together. Gerbils like to sleep curled up against each other. With a group, do put a second hiding place in the enclosure, so an animal can withdraw for a while if it wants to.
That is natural behaviour. In the wild, hamsters build their nest underground. If your hamster digs the house in halfway or makes tunnels around it, it feels at home. Do provide enough deep bedding so it can.
Yes. The house encourages the natural urge to gnaw. Gnawing is part of rodent life and keeps them busy. Check the house now and then and replace it once it has been chewed away too far.
Sweep or brush it out when you clean the enclosure and remove dirty nesting material and leftover fresh food. Make sure the wood stays dry. With hamsters, leave part of the nest and food store in place, as that gives peace of mind.
The model is the same, only the size differs. This 20 × 13 × 12 cm version is meant for small rodents. The large 31 × 23 × 18 cm version is meant for guinea pigs and rats.
