Spacious wooden house with sloping roof, made of quality wood. A safe place to rest, play and gnaw for guinea pigs and rats. Read more.
This is the spacious version of the Duvo+ wooden house Lodge with sloping roof. It is made of quality wood and gives your pet a safe place to rest, play and gnaw. The sloping roof gives the house a simple, calm shape that suits any enclosure. For guinea pigs and rats this is a nice size: big enough to lie in comfortably, without filling the whole enclosure.
Why is a hiding place so important? Guinea pigs are prey animals. In the wild they survive by quickly dashing to a safe spot. They still have that instinct. A guinea pig that always has a house within reach feels more secure and therefore dares to explore more. Rats use a house as a sleeping spot and a base. They carry food and nesting material there and make it their own corner.
Setting it up is easy. Place the house in a quiet spot, on a firm layer of bedding. Put a good handful of hay by the entrance: guinea pigs like to eat from their house, with the safe walls behind them. You can surprise rats by hiding a treat in the house now and then. The wood encourages the natural urge to gnaw. Your pet may chew it; replace the house once it has been chewed away too far.
At 31 × 23 × 18 cm, this house is roomy for one guinea pig, even a larger one. Some guinea pigs that get along well will lie in it together, but do not count on it: give each animal its own hiding place. For rats it is a roomy sleeping spot for a small group. Degus can use it too, but they chew wood away quickly, so check it more often.
Put a layer of Zooply bedding for guinea pigs under and around the house. If you keep degus, Zooply bedding for degus goes well with this house.
Yes. At 31 × 23 × 18 cm, even a larger guinea pig has enough room to lie in it and turn around. If you want two guinea pigs to be able to use it together, still add a second hiding place to the enclosure. Not every guinea pig likes to share.
Yes, that is actually a good idea. In a run, guinea pigs sometimes feel unsure because the space is big and open. With this house in it, they have a familiar place to run to. Do not place it in full sun.
Yes. The house encourages the natural urge to gnaw and gnawing is normal. Hay remains the most important thing for wearing down the teeth, though. Replace the house once it has been chewed away too far.
Sweep or brush the house out when you clean the enclosure. Remove wet or dirty hay and bedding and make sure the wood stays dry. Do not put the house in a damp corner.
It is the same model in a larger size. The small 20 × 13 × 12 cm version is for dwarf hamsters, mice and gerbils. This version is meant for guinea pigs and rats.
