A fruit cup is a real treat for many rodents. But a loose cup in the cage soon goes wrong. It gets knocked over, dragged around or ends up in the bedding. The Fruit cup holder Basic keeps the cup in its place. It is a simple wooden holder in which you put a fruit cup. You fix it to the bars with the wing nut. That way the cup stands firmly and upright, and there is less mess in the enclosure.
The holder is made of wood and is about 5 cm high. The width differs per holder, as it is a natural product. Back Zoo Nature lists the holder for rodent enclosures. Because you attach it to bars, it works best in a cage. It suits rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, mice and gerbils well. Do you have a tank or bin cage without bars? Then you cannot screw the holder in place. In that case, put the cup in a heavy bowl on the floor instead.
Hang the holder where your pet can easily reach it, for example just above a level or next to a hammock. For rats you can hang it a bit higher, as they love to climb. For hamsters, mice and gerbils, hang it low so they can reach it from the floor or a shelf. For rabbits and guinea pigs, fix it low on the bars of the hutch or run, at a height they can easily reach. Check that the wing nut is tight, because rodents love to pull at things. Do not place the holder above a hamster's nest or food store, so no jelly drips into the nest.
A fruit cup is a sweet treat. So only give it now and then and keep it small. Rats gain weight easily, so keep it as a reward. Degus are sensitive to sugar and must not have sweet snacks. So do not use the holder for fruit cups with them. Dwarf hamsters are also sensitive to sugar. Give them very little, or preferably none. For rabbits and guinea pigs, hay remains the basis. Wood is a natural material and rodents may gnaw on it. That is normal. Check the holder now and then and replace it once it has been gnawed down too far or no longer sits firmly. Remove a half-eaten cup after a few hours so it does not spoil. With hamsters, make sure they do not carry bits of jelly in their cheek pouches to the nest. Wipe the holder clean if there are leftovers on it and let it dry well.
