Sometimes you just want to spoil your pet a little. The Fruit Cups Strawberry from Back Zoo Nature are made for exactly that. Each cup contains a soft jelly with the sweet taste of strawberry. The jelly is soft and easy to eat, and most animals find it very tasty. A pack contains 6 cups. Back Zoo Nature describes the Fruit Cups as suitable for birds and rodents. At Knaagplaza we recommend them for rabbits, guinea pigs, rats, hamsters, mice and gerbils.
It is important to know what is inside. According to the composition, the jelly consists of sugar, fructose, fruit syrup and blossoms (gardenia flower), with preservatives and a mixture of flavourings. So it is a sweet treat, not a piece of fresh fruit. That is why the feeding advice is no more than 2 cups per animal per week. Rats put on weight easily, so a small amount is enough for them. For mice and hamsters a whole cup is a lot relative to their size. Let them eat from it for a while and then remove the rest.
Not every rodent can have sugar. Degus are prone to diabetes and must not have sugar, so never give them these Fruit Cups. Choose a sugar-free snack or some dried herbs for them instead. Dwarf hamsters, especially Campbell's and Russian dwarf hamsters, are also sensitive to sugar. Give them very little, or preferably none. Rabbits and guinea pigs may have a little now and then. Hay remains the basis of their diet, so see the fruit cup as a small treat and keep it to a few licks. Gerbils may also have a little now and then: a few licks is enough. Remove any leftovers afterwards, so no jelly ends up in the bedding.
First remove the plastic film from the cup. You can then simply place the cup on the floor or put it in a special fruit cup holder. Back Zoo Nature offers holders with and without a screw and wing nut. That keeps the cup clean and stops it from tipping over in the bedding. Hamsters like to carry food to their store. Jelly is perishable, so check the nest after a few hours and remove sticky leftovers. For a daily reward, use something else instead, such as Zooply snacks for rats or Zooply snacks for hamsters. For rabbits and guinea pigs, have a look at our rabbits and guinea pigs sections. With rabbits and guinea pigs, hold the cup for a moment and let them take a few licks, for example as a reward after brushing or nail clipping. Then take it away.
On warm days you can put a cup in the freezer. It turns into a cool ice treat your rat can nibble on for a long time. Store the remaining cups in a dry, cool and dark place, out of the reach of children.
