Hollow bamboo holder of approx. 20 x 3 cm for millet sprays, grains or grasses. Fixes to the bars with a screw and wing nut, so the food stays clean. Read more.
A millet spray or a bunch of grasses is something many rodents love to pluck at. Place it loosely in the enclosure, though, and it soon ends up buried in the bedding or in the toilet corner. The Grass Keeper keeps things tidy. It is a holder made from a natural, hollow bamboo stick of about 20 x 3 cm. You push the stems in upright, so they stand tall just like in nature. Your pet stands up, stretches and picks the seeds off itself. That is exactly the searching and plucking that comes naturally to rodents.
You attach the holder to the bars with a threaded screw and wing nut. That works with any cage with bars. Because the holder is fixed in place, it does not tip over and the grains stay clean. Do you have a tank or a bin cage without bars? Then you cannot attach the holder properly, so it is mainly meant for cages with bars. Hang it at a height your pet can reach while standing, but not so high that it has to jump. For a hamster or mouse that is just above the floor or next to a level.
Back Zoo Nature made the Grass Keeper for parrots and rodents. In our view it suits hamsters, rats, mice and gerbils best. They naturally love seeds and grains and enjoy picking them from an ear themselves. Millet is not included and is sold separately. You can also fill the holder with other grains or grasses. A few stems from the hay or a sprig of dried herbs work too. Do you keep degus? Then only use sugar-free herbs or grasses, as degus are sensitive to sugar.
Vary the filling to keep it interesting. One time millet, the next a few grasses or a piece of Zooply snacks for hamsters. For rats it works the same way, with Zooply snacks for rats. Do keep the amount small. Millet is a treat and not a replacement for the regular food. Rats gain weight easily, so be extra sparing with them. A hamster will often carry the seeds off to its stash. That is normal, and there is no need to remove that stash.
Bamboo is a natural material and will be gnawed on, which is normal. Replace the holder once it has been gnawed down too far or no longer sits firmly. Remove old, empty stems and refill the holder. If it gets dirty, rinse it with warm water and let it dry well. Because every bamboo stick is natural, each holder is unique.
The holder is fixed to bars with a screw and wing nut. In a tank without bars you cannot attach it properly.
No, millet is not included. It and other grains are available separately.
Yes, gnawing is normal. Replace the holder once it is too damaged.
Grains, grasses, a few stems of hay or a sprig of dried herbs. Vary for more interest.
Yes, but only fill it with sugar-free herbs or grasses. Degus are sensitive to sugar and should not have sweet snacks.
