If you want a natural-looking enclosure, a few pine cones are a must. They look lovely, smell of the forest and give your rodent plenty to do. The Back Zoo Nature Foraging Pine Cone is a large pine cone of about 17 x 10.5 cm. Your pet can climb on it, gnaw on it and search between the scales for a treat. That makes it a perfect match for natural rodent behaviour: sniffing, searching and gnawing.
With hamster scaping you turn the enclosure into a small piece of nature. Place the pine cone half buried in a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters, next to a root or a piece of cork. Scatter some moss or hay around it. It will look as if your hamster or gerbil lives on the forest floor. In our hamster scaping category you will find more natural materials that go well with it. The pine cone also has a screw with washers and a wing nut. If your pet lives in a cage with bars, as rats often do, you can also fix it to the side.
The pine cone becomes a real search puzzle when you tuck snacks between the scales. Push a few seeds or small pieces in, or use Zooply snacks for hamsters. Want to make it harder? Glue the pieces in place with gum arabic mixed with a little water. Let it dry well before putting the pine cone in the enclosure. Your pet then has to work hard to reach the treat. For degus, use only sugar-free snacks and herbs. For dwarf hamsters, no sweet snacks or fruit.
The size works well for hamsters, gerbils, mice, rats and degus. A mouse or dwarf hamster climbs right over it, while a rat picks it up and turns it around. Gerbils and degus usually gnaw on it eagerly and remove the scales one by one. In a group, place it in an open spot so several animals can reach it. Or put a few pine cones around the enclosure, so there is no need to squabble.
Gnawing on the pine cone is normal and part of the fun. After a while there will be less of it left. Then replace it with a new one. Remove leftovers of fresh snacks after a few hours and make sure no perishable food ends up in your hamster's nest. If the pine cone is screwed to the bars, check now and then that the wing nut is still tight.
It will gnaw on them and bite off pieces, which is normal. Most pets leave the bits or use them in the nest.
