This middle size from the Esve Mix & Play range is a 20 cm bamboo stem with two openings. It is compact enough for a hamster or gerbil enclosure and big enough to keep rats busy for a while. The idea is simple: you hide something tasty, your pet finds it.
Gerbils and hamsters love to dig. So try burying the stem halfway in the bedding, with the openings just visible. Your pet then has to dig before it can reach the contents. For rats you can place the stem on a shelf, so they can reach it from different sides. That turns one toy into a new challenge every time.
Vary the filling. One day a few dried flowers or herbs, another day a treat or some hay. Hamsters are hoarders and take the loot to their stash, which is normal behaviour. Bamboo may be gnawed. Replace the stem when it falls apart or develops sharp edges.
