A food bowl does not have to be plastic. This Bamboo Feed Cup from the Esve Mix & Play range is made of bamboo and measures 5 cm. Small and practical, it fits well in a naturally furnished enclosure, between cork, twigs and hideouts.
Because of its small size, this bowl is mainly meant for small rodents such as hamsters, mice and gerbils. Use it for a handful of dried herbs, a few treats or a small portion of food. For rats and degus it makes a nice treat bowl next to their regular food bowl. With several animals, provide enough feeding spots to prevent squabbles.
Place the bowl firmly, for example pressed slightly into the bedding, so it is less likely to tip over. Bamboo is a natural material and rodents sometimes gnaw on it. That is fine, but replace the bowl when it has been chewed too far. Hamsters and mice are hoarders: they stuff food into their cheek pouches and carry it to their stash. So an empty bowl does not always mean everything has been eaten.
For one mouse or dwarf hamster it can work, but the bowl is small. For the daily food portion of larger rodents, a bigger, heavy food bowl is better. This one is ideal for herbs and treats.
Wipe it clean when dry or brush it out. Let it dry well if it gets wet. Always throw away mouldy or dirty food.
A little gnawing is normal. Replace the bowl when large pieces are missing or it develops sharp edges.
