A warm, soft nest is very important for small rodents. That is where they sleep, where they retreat and where hamsters keep their stash. Silk Cotton from the Esve Mix & Play range is soft nesting material. Your pet collects it, carries it to its sleeping spot and builds a nest with it.
Offer the material in small tufts and let your pet do the work. Put a tuft at the entrance of the hideout or hide it under a layer of bedding. Collecting and carrying is enrichment in itself. Combine it with hay or paper nesting material. That way your pet can choose and the result is a sturdy, airy nest.
With any soft, fibrous nesting material, keep a close eye. Do not give too much at once and check now and then that no long fibres have wrapped around little feet. If you notice your pet eating large amounts of the material, remove it. When cleaning, leave the nest as intact as possible. Only remove wet or dirty parts, so your pet does not have to start over every time.
The 50 gram pack is handy for trying it out or for one animal. The 100 gram pack is better value if you have several enclosures.
A small tuft is enough. Your pet takes what it needs. Only top up when most of it has been used.
Offer it in moderation and keep an eye on things. Check that no fibres are wrapped around feet and remove it if your pet eats it. If in doubt, consult a vet experienced with rodents.
