Product description

Raffia palm leaves - Coarse strands of palm leaf for scaping, foraging and nesting for rabbits, rats, hamsters, mice, gerbils and degus - 50 grams

Rodents and rabbits are busy with their surroundings all day long. They collect, drag, shred and build. These Raffia Palm Leaves give them great material to do just that. They are coarse strands of palm leaf, completely natural. Scatter them over the bedding for a natural look and plenty of foraging fun. Many animals also use the strands to build a warm and sheltered nest.

The palm leaf is part of the Discovery Bedding range by Back Zoo Nature. According to Back Zoo Nature it is completely natural and free from additives or chemicals. Back Zoo Nature describes it as suitable for rodents and rabbits. The bag holds about 50 grams. Palm leaf is light, so you can cover a good area of floor with it. As it is a natural product, the strands vary in colour, length and shape.

In a naturally decorated enclosure, as in hamster scaping, raffia makes a lovely top layer. Scatter it over a deep layer of bedding and hide a few pieces of food or a snack underneath. A hamster or gerbil will dig through it and drag the strands back to its burrow. Mice and rats like to build a nest from it inside a hideout. If you want to give them extra nesting material, combine it with Zooply nesting material for mice. You can use the palm leaf for degus too. Just hide only sugar-free snacks or herbs in it.

For rabbits, raffia works well in a play corner or in a box with hay. Mix a handful of strands through the hay and sprinkle some herbs in it. Your rabbit will start digging and searching. Place it in a corner of the enclosure or run, on a layer of Zooply bedding for rabbits. That keeps the rest of the enclosure clean. Alternate the palm leaf with other materials, such as dried leaves, so it keeps feeling new.

It is normal for your pet to nibble on the strands or carry them to its nest. Long fibres do need some attention, though. For small animals such as mice and dwarf hamsters, cut long strands into shorter pieces. That way they cannot get their feet tangled in them. Remove wet or dirty strands and top up when needed. When cleaning, leave a hamster's nest alone as much as possible. Store the bag in a dry place so the palm leaf does not become musty.

Frequently asked questions

Can my hamster build a nest with it?

Yes. Back Zoo Nature says the palm leaf is popular for building nests. Do cut long strands shorter for a dwarf hamster.

Is raffia suitable for rabbits?

Yes, Back Zoo Nature lists rabbits as suitable. Use it as foraging material mixed through hay or in a play corner.

Can my pet nibble on the palm leaf?

Nibbling is normal. According to Back Zoo Nature the palm leaf is completely natural and free from additives.

How much is in a bag?

About 50 grams. Palm leaf is light, so you can cover a good area of floor with it.

Can I combine it with regular bedding?

Yes, that is the idea. Use it as a top layer on a good layer of bedding, not as a replacement for it.
