Small hollow cork trunk of approx. Ø 10 x 5-9 cm. A natural hiding spot to crawl into, climb on and gnaw. For mice and dwarf hamsters. Read more.
Mice and dwarf hamsters are small prey animals. They feel safest when they can quickly crawl away somewhere. The more of those little spots there are in the enclosure, the calmer and more confident they become. The Trunkhut Mini is one of those spots. It is a small, round hollow trunk of natural cork. Your pet can crawl into it, climb on it and gnaw on it. The cork is harvested from the cork oak without cutting the tree down. The bark then grows back.
The Mini is about 10 cm in diameter and 5 to 9 cm long. That is a small size. It suits fancy mice and dwarf hamsters, such as the Roborovski, the Campbell and the Russian dwarf hamster. For a Syrian hamster it is too small. A Syrian needs a larger hideout, and that is what the sizes Small to Large are for. For rats, gerbils and degus the Mini is also too cramped as a house. Every Trunkhut is a natural product, so the shape and thickness of the cork vary from piece to piece.
Place the Trunkhut on a deep layer of Zooply bedding for mice. Press it in a little, so it sits firmly and feels like a real burrow. Put some Zooply nesting material for mice nearby. Your pet will drag it inside and build a nest. You can also half bury the Trunkhut, so a dwarf hamster can dig a tunnel underneath. That way it becomes the entrance to its own underground world.
The Trunkhut comes with a screw and wing nut. These are meant for attaching it to bars. In a tank you do not need them. Place it so that the screw points towards the wall and is not in the way. Do you have a cage with narrow bar spacing for mice? Then you can hang it slightly above the floor as an extra resting spot higher up. Mice love to climb. If you place several hideouts in the enclosure, each animal can choose its own spot. That helps prevent squabbles in a group.
Cork gets gnawed. That is normal and keeps the teeth busy. If the Trunkhut has been gnawed down a lot or is falling apart, replace it. Do not remove the whole nest every time you clean. Mice and dwarf hamsters find that stressful. Only remove dirty patches and perishable food. Tap the Trunkhut out now and then and let it dry if it gets damp.
No, with a diameter of about 10 cm it is too small. Choose a larger Trunkhut size for a Syrian hamster.
Only if you want to attach it to bars. In a tank, place it on the floor with the screw facing the wall.
Yes. Half buried in deep bedding it becomes a natural entrance to tunnels underneath.
At least one per animal, preferably one extra. That way everyone can choose their own spot.
Yes, that is normal. Replace the Trunkhut when it has been gnawed down too far.
