In nature, rabbits and rodents love to pull loose bark off trees. They gnaw on it, tear it off and play with it. With Willow Bark from Back Zoo Nature you bring that behaviour indoors. These are dried pieces of willow, 100% natural and free from additives or chemicals. A bag contains about 100 grams. Each piece differs in colour, size and shape, because it is a natural product.
Back Zoo Nature intends the willow bark as a topping on the bedding. Scatter the pieces over the floor and your enclosure gets a natural, woodland look. Your pet will head straight for it to sniff and gnaw. This encourages foraging, something animals in the wild spend a large part of their day doing. For hamsters, gerbils, mice and degus it fits beautifully with hamster scaping and other naturally decorated enclosures, together with wood, cork and moss.
It works just as well for rabbits and guinea pigs. Place a few pieces in the hay or on the floor of the run. They will nibble on them and search between them. Hay of course remains the most important. Offer it in unlimited amounts, for example Zooply hay for rabbits, and see the willow bark as an extra. Want to turn it into a search game? Hide a few pellets or a small snack between the bark, so your pet has to search first.
Back Zoo Nature describes the willow bark as suitable for rodents and rabbits. We think of rabbits, guinea pigs, hamsters, degus, rats, gerbils and mice. Because it is simply dried willow without additives, you can also give it to degus, which must not have sugar. Rats sometimes drag the pieces off to their nest, which is perfectly fine. For small pets such as dwarf hamsters and mice, you can break larger pieces into smaller bits.
Gnawing on willow bark is normal and part of the fun. The pieces get smaller and are eventually used up. Remove dirty or wet pieces regularly, especially in the toilet corner, and top up with new ones. With hamsters, you can leave pieces in the nest as long as they are clean and dry. Store the rest of the bag in a dry place.
Gnawing and nibbling is the idea. Back Zoo Nature describes the product as suitable for rabbits. Hay remains the main food, though.
