A soft, woven hollow to crawl into. The Seagrass Hideout from Back Zoo Nature is a hideout woven entirely from seagrass. Your pet can rest and sleep inside, but also climb and clamber over the weave. The coarse weave offers grip everywhere. Seagrass is a natural material that your pet may gnaw on too. That gives it a sleeping spot, a climbing object and something to nibble on, all in one.
The hideout measures about 25 x 20 x 20 cm and hangs from a stainless steel chain with a quick link. That makes it very suitable for rats. Rats love to climb and prefer to sleep high up in the cage, in a hanging hollow or a hammock. So hang the hideout from the roof of the cage or under a level. Make sure your rats can easily reach it from a shelf or rope. A hanging hideout is also a quiet spot for a group: they love to snuggle up close together.
You can also simply place the hideout on the floor, without the chain. That makes it suitable as a house for hamsters, mice and gerbils. Place it on a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters. Your hamster will dig around or under it and build its nest inside. Mice love climbing on and in it. Do not hang the hideout high up for hamsters, mice and gerbils. They fall more easily and prefer a spot on the ground.
Make the hollow cosy with some Zooply nesting material for rats or hay. Place it next to the opening and your pet will drag it inside. Hide a snack in the weave now and then. Rats are clever and enjoy searching for something. Change the position of the hideout every so often, for example from the top to the bottom of the cage. A change in the enclosure keeps them curious.
Seagrass may be gnawed. That is normal. Replace the hideout when it has been chewed apart too far, and check that the chain and quick link are still secure. Rats sometimes pee in their sleeping spot. In that case remove wet or dirty bits of nesting material. Seagrass dries slowly, so do not get it wet. If the weave itself has become wet or dirty, replace the hideout.
Yes. Without the chain it is a floor house for hamsters, mice and gerbils.
At about 25 x 20 x 20 cm a few rats can lie in it. For a large group, provide more sleeping spots.
Yes, chewing is normal. Replace the hideout when it is too badly damaged.
Shake it out and brush it off dry. Do not get the seagrass wet, as it dries slowly.
Degus chew a lot and hard. They will destroy seagrass quickly. A wooden or cork house lasts longer with degus.
