A piece of natural driftwood of approx. 25 to 35 cm with branches and ridges. A climbing element, resting spot and hideaway in a naturally decorated rodent enclosure. Read more.
If you want to make your rodent's enclosure feel more natural, a piece of driftwood is a great place to start. This Driftwood Medium is natural driftwood with an irregular shape, branches and ridges. That shape is exactly what makes it interesting. Your pet can climb on it, walk over it, rest on it and hide underneath it. A flat enclosure instantly gains depth and height differences with a single piece of wood. And for a rodent, every new nook is something to explore.
The Medium size measures about 25 to 35 cm. As it is a natural product, every piece has its own shape, colour and texture. The piece you receive will therefore look slightly different from the photo. At this length it fits well in the enclosure of a Syrian or dwarf hamster, in a gerbilarium and with degus. Rats use it as an extra climbing spot on the floor or on a wide level. Mice find small spots between the ridges to crawl into. If your enclosure is small, check that there is still enough floor space left next to the wood for running and digging.
Driftwood is a lovely base for hamster scaping: decorating an enclosure in a natural way. Bury the wood partly in a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters, so it lies firmly and cannot tip over. A hamster loves to dig a tunnel under the wood, and that gives it a safe spot. Gerbils do the same. Place the wood against a hideout, for example, to create a sheltered route. Scatter some hay or dried herbs around it and it becomes a foraging spot as well.
Change the layout a little now and then. Turn the wood over, move it to another spot or combine it with a piece of cork or a liana. Do not do this too often or all at once, as hamsters in particular like a fixed place for their nest. A small change is enough to send your pet off exploring again. With degus and rats, which are very active, you can adjust things a bit more often.
Gnawing on the wood is normal. Rodents explore everything with their teeth. Check the wood regularly for sharp points or thin bits that are about to break off, and replace it once it has been gnawed down too far or no longer lies firmly. When cleaning, remove the dirty bedding around the wood. Brush the wood itself clean. If it has become wet, let it dry completely before putting it back.
The Medium size is about 25 to 35 cm. Every piece is unique in shape, colour and texture.
Yes, as long as the enclosure is large enough. Make sure there is enough room left next to the wood for running and digging.
Yes, gnawing is normal. Degus are strong chewers, so check the wood more often and replace it when it has been gnawed down too far.
Bury it partly in the bedding or let it lean against a hideout or the side of the enclosure.
Certainly. Driftwood goes well with cork, lianas, hay and dried herbs. That way you create a natural landscape.
