Natural root of sturdy teak wood, approx. 20 to 30 cm. For running over, climbing on and hiding under. Every piece is unique. Read more.
Would you like to set up your rodent's enclosure like a little piece of nature? A root is a great place to start. The Back Zoo Nature Teak Root is a natural product made of durable, very strong teak wood. It has grown in an irregular shape, with bends, knobs and hollow spots. That makes it not only nice to look at, but also something your pet can really use. Your pet can run over it, climb on it and hide underneath. An enclosure with a root like this instantly gains more levels and more hiding places.
This is the Small size, measuring about 20 to 30 cm. Because every piece is unique, the photos are an impression. No two roots have the same shape. The size works well for hamsters, gerbils and mice. A dwarf hamster or mouse can easily crawl underneath, while a Syrian hamster will mainly climb over it. Rats and degus also like to use it as a climbing and lookout spot. For rabbits and guinea pigs a root of this size is too small to do much with.
Hamster scaping is all about an enclosure that resembles your pet's natural habitat. Start with a deep layer of bedding, so your hamster or gerbil can dig. A layer of at least about 20 cm works well, and more is better. You can use Zooply bedding for hamsters, for example. Press the root firmly into it, so it does not tip over when your pet digs underneath. A tunnel or burrow will then form under the root by itself. Combine it with cork, moss and other natural materials from our hamster scaping category. That gives you an enclosure where your pet has something to discover every night.
Do not place the root against the wall of the enclosure, so your pet cannot use it to climb out. In a cage with bars, make sure the root is not right next to the door or an opening. Do you keep rats or degus in a tall cage? Then place the root on the floor or on a wide level. Scatter some food around it or hide a few pieces between the bends. Your pets will then actively search around it. For degus, only use sugar-free snacks or herbs.
Teak is hard and lasts a long time. Still, your pet will gnaw on it now and then, and that is normal. Gnawing is part of being a rodent. Check the root regularly for sharp splinters or spots that have been chewed too far. Replace it once it is worn. Dirt can be brushed off dry. If the root has become wet, let it dry thoroughly before putting it back in the enclosure.
