Product description

Teak root - Sturdy teak wood root to climb over and hide under for rats, hamsters, gerbils and degus - 30 to 40 cm

An enclosure only becomes truly interesting when there is something to explore. A gnarled root is perfect for that. The Teak root from Back Zoo Nature is a piece of natural teak wood measuring 30 to 40 cm. Teak is a durable and very strong type of wood. Your pet can run over the root, climb on it and crawl underneath. That gives it a lookout, a climbing route and a hiding place in one. Because no two roots are the same, each piece gives the enclosure its own character.

This root is a great fit for hamster scaping. That means furnishing an enclosure in a natural way with wood, cork, branches and hiding places, so your pet can dig, climb and hide. Place the root half buried in a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters. A small hollow will form under the root, where your hamster can dig a tunnel. Gerbils do the same: they love digging under wood. Press the bedding firmly around the root so it lies securely and cannot tip over.

At 30 to 40 cm this is a sizeable piece of wood. That makes it suitable for the somewhat larger rodents and roomier enclosures. A Syrian hamster gets a lovely climbing object. Rats use the root as a climbing frame and resting spot on the floor of a large cage. Gerbils and degus run over it and use it as a lookout. It can also work for a dwarf hamster or mouse, as long as the enclosure is large enough and the root does not take up too much floor space.

Combine the root with other natural elements. Place some cork or a hideout next to it, or scatter some hay and Zooply bedding for gerbils around it. Hide a few pieces of food or a snack in the cracks of the wood. Your pet will start sniffing and searching. Change the layout a little now and then. A root that first lay upright and now lies on its side is a new discovery for your pet.

The wood may be gnawed. That is normal, especially for degus, rats and gerbils, which love to chew. Replace the root when too much has been chewed away or when sharp points appear. Wipe away wet spots on the wood and let it dry properly. Take a wet root out of the enclosure for a while. Because every piece is unique, the pictures are an impression.

Frequently asked questions

Is teak wood suitable for rodents?

Back Zoo Nature sells this root for rodent enclosures, to climb on, run over and hide under.

How do I keep the root from falling over?

Lay it on its widest side and press the bedding firmly around it. If your pet digs underneath, check that it still lies securely.

Does the root fit in a dwarf hamster enclosure?

Yes, if the enclosure is large enough. Make sure there is enough free floor space and digging space left.

May my degu chew on the wood?

Yes, chewing is normal. Replace the root when it has been gnawed down too far.

Why does my root look different from the picture?

Every piece of teak wood is unique. Shape, colour and size vary, within the size range of 30 to 40 cm.
