An enclosure only really becomes a piece of nature when there is wood in it. Driftwood is perfect for this. It has irregular shapes, branches and ridges, and no two pieces are the same. This piece of driftwood in size Small is smaller than 25 cm. Use it as a climbing feature, a resting spot or simply as natural decoration. It adds depth and structure to the enclosure, and gives your pet new spots to explore.
Rodents are curious. A new piece of wood is sniffed, climbed and investigated straight away. A hamster climbs on top to look around, a mouse runs across it and hides in a hollow underneath. Gerbils and degus use it as a lookout. Rats clamber over it or lie on it for a short rest. So one piece of wood leads to lots of different behaviour, simply by being there.
Driftwood is ideal for hamster scaping, and for a natural setup for gerbils, mice, rats and degus. Place it half buried in a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters, so that a hollow forms underneath. Your hamster will happily dig a tunnel there. For gerbils, a deep layer of Zooply bedding for gerbils works just as well. Put the wood against a hideout, next to a tunnel or in a corner with some moss. That creates a natural transition between the floor and the rest of the setup. Make sure the wood lies firmly. It must not be able to roll over when your pet climbs on it or digs underneath.
At smaller than 25 cm, this piece fits well in an enclosure for hamsters, gerbils, mice and degus. For rats it is a nice addition, although they will mainly clamber over it. A rat cage often has more height than floor space. In that case, place the wood on a level or on the floor near a hammock. Because every piece of driftwood is unique, it varies in shape, colour and texture. After unpacking, check that there are no sharp points.
Gnawing on the wood is normal and allowed. Replace it when it has been gnawed down too far, is very dirty or stays damp. Take it out when you clean the enclosure and brush it off dry. Always let it dry well before putting it back. Move the wood around now and then, or swap it with other scaping material. An enclosure that changes a little stays interesting.
