Rats are clever, curious animals that use every level of their cage. They climb, explore and keep choosing a different place to sleep. A hanging house gives them an extra level to climb to and a sheltered spot to retreat to. It is also a fun activity: rats love dragging their own nesting material up to it.
The hanging house is easy to hang in any enclosure. Hang it at a height your rats can reach easily, for example next to a level, a shelf or a ladder. Do not hang it so high that a fall from the entrance would be a hard landing. Put some nesting material by the cushion, and your rats can arrange the inside just the way they like.
The house measures 22.5 × 22.5 × 22.5 cm. One or two adult rats lie in it comfortably, and young rats sometimes squeeze in three at a time. If you keep a larger group, hang up several sleeping spots. Plush is soft, but not meant for chewing. Rats are curious and try everything. So for the first while, check that they do not chew the fabric or swallow bits of it, and otherwise remove the house. Use low-dust Zooply bedding for rats below the house and give them nesting material to furnish it.

Remove the house. Swallowing bits of fabric is not good. Some rats leave plush alone, others start chewing it straight away. Offer a chewer a wooden house or one made of another material instead.
