Small wooden house with a pointed roof, made of quality wood. A darkened sleeping spot for daytime, for dwarf hamsters, mice and gerbils. Read more.
A dark spot of its own to sleep in: that is what this Duvo+ wooden house Lodge is all about. The house has a classic pointed roof and is made of quality wood. Inside it is darkened, which is exactly what small rodents look for. Hamsters sleep during the day and only become active at dusk. Mice and gerbils also like to withdraw when things get busy. In a dark house they feel safe and can rest undisturbed.
Wood is also simply a good material for rodents. The house encourages the natural urge to gnaw: your pet may chew the edges and the roof, and that is completely normal. It is part of their behaviour and keeps them busy. If the house has been chewed away too far over time, replace it with a new one.
Here is how to set it up. Place the house on a deep layer of bedding, in a quiet part of the enclosure, away from the wheel. Many hamsters and mice will dig the house in partly or drag nesting material to it. Give them room to do so. Put a bit of nesting material next to the entrance and your pet will build its own nest inside. Do not empty the house completely every time you clean: a hamster often keeps its food store there, and a bare nest causes needless stress.
At 15 × 11 × 12 cm this is a small house, and we will be honest about that. It suits dwarf hamsters, mice and gerbils well. Gerbils and mice live in groups; they like to lie close together, but with a larger group do add a second hiding place. For an adult Syrian hamster this house is too cramped. It needs a roomier house to turn around in and build a nest.
A good house works best on a good base. Combine it with Zooply bedding for hamsters and give your mice or hamsters some Zooply nesting material to make the inside soft. That creates a place where your pet truly feels at home.
No. At 15 × 11 × 12 cm it is too small for an adult Syrian hamster. A Syrian hamster wants to be able to turn around and build a proper nest. Look at a larger wooden house for it. For dwarf hamsters, this size is pleasantly snug.
No, that is normal. The house is made of wood and encourages the natural urge to gnaw. Gnawing is part of mouse life and keeps them busy. Do keep an eye on it: if it has been chewed away too far or becomes unstable, replace it.
Sweep or brush the house out when you clean the enclosure, and remove dirty nesting material and spoiled food. Keep the wood dry. With hamsters, leave part of the old nest, so it keeps a familiar smell.
Provide at least one hiding place per animal, and preferably one extra. With a group of mice or gerbils, this prevents one animal claiming the only sleeping spot. You can combine this house with another wooden house or a tunnel.
In a quiet spot, away from the wheel and the food bowl. Put it on a firm layer of bedding, so your pet can dig around and under it without it toppling over.
