Sometimes you want to give your pet something special, as a reward or simply because you can. The Fruit Cups Mix from Back Zoo Nature is made for that. These are small plastic cups filled with soft jelly that mimics the sweet taste of fruit. The mix contains six flavours: melon, orange, strawberry, banana, honey and yoghurt. The pack holds six cups. Thanks to the soft texture they are easy to eat, even for small pets.
To be honest: this is a sweet snack. According to the packaging, the jelly consists of sugar, fructose, fruit syrup and blossoms (gardenia flower and saffron), with preservatives and flavourings. Back Zoo Nature itself says that fresh fruit is healthier and that the cups are only meant as an occasional treat. The feeding advice is a maximum of 2 cups per animal per week. For a mouse, a whole cup is already a lot. Let them have a taste and then remove it.
That is why this snack is not for every pet. Degus are sensitive to sugar and must not have sweet snacks, and certainly no honey. Dwarf hamsters, especially Campbell's and Russian dwarf hamsters, are also sensitive to sugar. Give them very little, or preferably none. Rabbits and guinea pigs may have a little now and then. Hay remains the basis of their diet, so see the fruit cup as a small treat and keep it to a few licks. Gerbils may also have a little now and then: a few licks is enough. Remove any leftovers afterwards, so no jelly ends up in the bedding. Rats, fancy mice and Syrian hamsters can also have a little now and then. Rats do gain weight easily, so keep it to a treat. Use a fruit cup as a reward, for example while taming. Rats are clever and quickly learn that your hand means something tasty. With six flavours in the mix, you will soon find out which one is the favourite. Remove the plastic film before offering a cup. On hot days, Back Zoo Nature suggests freezing a cup beforehand. Special fruit cup holders are also available, with and without a wing nut. You can fix them to the bars or place them on the floor of a tank, so the cup stays clean and does not tip over. With rabbits and guinea pigs, hold the cup for a moment and let them take a few licks, for example as a reward after brushing or nail clipping. Then take it away.
Remove a half-eaten cup after a few hours. Soft jelly gets dirty quickly and does not belong in a hamster's food stash. So check whether your Syrian hamster is carrying jelly to its nest in its cheek pouches, and remove it if needed. Store the remaining cups in a dry, cool and dark place, out of reach of children.
