Large piece of natural holewood of approx. 45 to 60 cm, with hollows and branches. As a climbing element, resting spot and decoration for rodents. Read more.
Holewood is wood full of holes, hollows and branches. That is exactly what makes it so interesting for rodents. Every hole is a passage, every hollow a hiding place and every branch a new route to climb. The Back Zoo Nature Holewood Large is a big piece of natural wood measuring about 45 to 60 cm. You use it as a climbing element, a resting spot or a natural decoration. It gives the enclosure more structure and invites your pet to explore.
At this length, the Large is a sizeable piece. That makes it best suited to spacious enclosures. Rats and degus, which love to climb and move a lot, get the most use out of it. In a large hamster enclosure or gerbilarium it makes a lovely centrepiece for your hamster or gerbil to crawl over and through. For a small group of mice it is an adventurous climbing frame too. Do measure beforehand whether the piece fits in your enclosure, because at 45 to 60 cm it takes up space. As it is a natural product, every piece has its own shape, colour and texture.
Here is how to set it up. In a tank or bin cage with a deep layer of bedding, place the holewood partly buried in the substrate. That keeps it stable and lets your pet dig underneath. For hamsters and gerbils, Zooply bedding for hamsters or Zooply bedding for gerbils makes a good base. For rats and degus in a tall cage, put the wood on the floor or on a wide level, for example as a link between two levels. Make sure it cannot wobble or slide, especially when animals are underneath.
Holewood gets even more fun when you hide something in it. Put a few pieces of food or herbs in the hollows. Your pets will then sniff their way through the wood to find them. For degus, use only sugar-free snacks and herbs. Combine the holewood with other natural materials, such as cork, moss and branches. Have a look in our hamster scaping category. That way you create an enclosure that resembles a piece of forest, with plenty of places to hide and explore.
This is natural wood, so your pets will gnaw on it. That is normal and part of being a rodent. Check the holewood regularly for sharp splinters and thin parts that might break off. Replace it once it has been chewed too far or is worn. Brush off any dirt. If it got wet, let it dry completely before it goes back into the enclosure.
It fits well in a spacious hamster enclosure. In a smaller one it takes up a lot of room. So measure the floor of your enclosure first.
