Small rodents feel safest in a dark, enclosed hollow. A coconut is perfect for that. The Coconut with ladder from Back Zoo Nature is a hollow, sturdy coconut with a wooden ladder attached. The hard shell lasts a long time. The ladder has five sturdy rungs, fixed to the coconut with sisal rope. That gives your pet a hideout and a climbing route in one. The coconut already contains some natural coconut fibre. Your pet can turn it into a nest, or drag it out and use it elsewhere.
The opening of the coconut is about 6 cm in diameter. The whole toy, including the ladder, measures about 50 x 11 x 12 cm. That opening decides which animals the coconut is suitable for. Mice and dwarf hamsters crawl in easily. Gerbils fit too and use it as a resting place. For an adult Syrian hamster or rat the opening is tight. They are better off with a larger hideout. Rabbits and guinea pigs do not fit at all.
You can use the coconut in two ways. In a cage with bars, hang it up with the pear-shaped clip. Hang it low, so that the ladder reaches the floor or a level. Your pet then climbs up via the rungs. Do not hang it too high: a mouse or hamster that falls can get hurt. In a tank or enclosure without bars, place the coconut on the floor. Lean the ladder at an angle against a level or a piece of wood, as a walkway. Press the coconut slightly into the Zooply bedding for hamsters, so it does not roll away.
Make the hideout extra cosy with some Zooply nesting material for mice next to the opening. Your pet will drag it inside and build a nest just the way it likes. Mice often live in a group. In that case provide more hideouts in the enclosure, so not everyone has to share the same coconut. A hamster is kept alone, but it also likes to choose between a few sleeping spots.
Coconut, wood and sisal may be gnawed. That is normal. Do check the sisal rope regularly. If it frays, trim loose threads short so that no little feet get tangled. If the rungs come loose or the rope has been chewed through, replace the toy. With a hamster, leave the nest alone as much as possible. Only remove wet or dirty bits, and perishable food from the hoard.
The opening is about 6 cm in diameter. For an adult Syrian hamster that is tight. For dwarf hamsters, mice and gerbils it is fine.
No, you do not. In a tank, place it on the floor and use the ladder as a walkway.
Chewing is normal. Check the rope regularly and trim loose threads. If it has been chewed through, replace the toy.
Just leave it in. Your pet uses it as nesting material. Remove it when it becomes wet or dirty.
Shake out loose bits and brush the inside out dry. Let the coconut dry thoroughly if it has become wet.
