In nature, food is never waiting in a bowl. Rabbits and rodents spend a large part of the day searching, sniffing and gnawing. That urge does not disappear when they live with you. The snack roll gives them an outlet for it. It is a wooden roll with three holes. You put something tasty inside, and your pet has to push, turn and sniff the roll to get it out. That way it works for its treat, which keeps it active and curious.
To fill it, unscrew the side, put something in and screw it back on. Choose a filling that suits your pet. For rabbits and guinea pigs, Zooply snacks for rabbits, dried herbs or a few pellets work well. For rats, choose Zooply rat snacks. For degus, only use a sugar-free filling, such as sugar-free Zooply snacks for degus or herbs. So do not give degus and dwarf hamsters dried fruit, even though it is sometimes mentioned as a filling.
The roll is about 10.5 cm long and 5.5 cm in diameter. According to Back Zoo Nature it is meant for rabbits and rodents. A rabbit or guinea pig pushes the roll across the floor with its nose. Rats often pick it up and turn it around with their front paws. A Syrian hamster or degu rolls it through the bedding. For mice and dwarf hamsters the roll is a bit big and heavy to play with properly.
Place the roll on a flat surface, such as the floor of the run or a level, so it rolls easily. In a deep layer of bedding it rolls less easily, but there you can bury it halfway as an extra search task. Start with a filling that falls out quickly, so your pet gets the idea. Then make it harder. Do not offer the roll all the time, but swap it with other toys. That way it stays a challenge. Snacks are an extra: count them in what your pet gets in a day.
The roll is made of wood, and gnawing is normal. Check regularly how the roll is doing, especially around the holes and the thread. Replace it when the wood has been chewed down too far or the side no longer closes properly. Remove old leftovers before refilling, so no spoiled food stays inside.
Unscrew the side, put in a snack, herbs or a few pellets and screw it shut again. Your pet gets it out through the three holes.
Yes, but only fill it sugar-free, for example with herbs or sugar-free degu snacks. Degus are sensitive to sugar.
At 10.5 x 5.5 cm it is on the large side for a dwarf hamster. A Syrian hamster can handle it better.
Yes, gnawing on wood is normal. Replace the roll when it has been chewed down too far or no longer closes properly.
A few times a week is enough. Swap it with other toys to keep it exciting. Give snacks in moderation.
