Branching piece of natural spiderwood of about 30 to 40 cm. Climbing wood, resting spot and decoration in one, with extra routes and sheltered spots. Read more.
You recognise spiderwood straight away by its shape. The wood branches out into several arms, a bit like the legs of a spider. Those branches make it ideal for a rodent enclosure. Every arm is a new route to climb over, and between the branches sheltered spots appear to crawl under. Your pet can rest on it, scramble over it and look at its surroundings from a higher point.
This is the Medium size, about 30 to 40 cm. Because it is a natural product, every piece has its own shape, colour and branching. So you never know exactly what your piece will look like, which is exactly what makes furnishing fun. With this length you add a lot of structure to a medium or large enclosure in one go.
A piece of 30 to 40 cm fits well in the enclosure of a Syrian hamster, gerbils or degus. They climb over it, use it as a lookout and dig under the branches. Rats like to use it as a climbing frame, on the floor or on a wide level. Mice find dozens of little spots in it. For a dwarf hamster in a small enclosure this piece may be on the large side. Check that there is still enough floor left to run and dig.
Spiderwood is a lovely base for hamster scaping, and for gerbils and degus too. Set the wood firmly in a deep layer of Zooply bedding so it cannot tip over when your pet climbs on it. Gerbils and degus love digging tunnels under a piece of wood like this. Combine it with a hideout, plants or lianas. Place some sugar-free Zooply snacks for degus between the branches and it becomes a search game as well. For rats, the same works with their own snacks.
Gnawing on spiderwood is normal. That is especially true for degus and rats, which are keen chewers. Check the wood regularly for sharp points or thin twigs that are about to break off. Replace the piece when it has been chewed down too far or no longer stands stable. You do not need to take it out every time you clean. Remove dirty bedding around it and brush the wood off when it gets dirty.
About 30 to 40 cm. Because it is a natural product, shape and branching vary per piece.
Yes. Degus love climbing and get a lot out of the branches. They do chew keenly, so the wood wears faster with them.
Set it firmly in a deep layer of bedding or place it with the wide side down. That way it stays stable when your pet climbs on it.
That depends on the size of the enclosure. In a small enclosure this piece takes up a lot of space. In that case, choose a smaller piece of wood.
Yes. With two or three pieces at different heights you create a real climbing landscape. Do leave enough open floor.
