Teaky house from Back Zoo Nature: a hiding place with a natural look for rats, hamsters, mice and gerbils. For sleeping, hiding and building a nest. Read more.
A rodent always wants somewhere to retreat to. Rats, hamsters, mice and gerbils are prey animals in the wild. They only feel truly safe when they have a dark, sheltered spot to withdraw to. That is where they sleep, build their nest and sometimes store a little food supply. The Teaky house from Back Zoo Nature is such a hiding place. It gives your pet a spot of its own in the enclosure, with a natural look that suits a setup full of wood, bark and moss.
Back Zoo Nature lists the Teaky house in its rodent decor range. The product page does not include a detailed description, so we deliberately do not mention sizes or materials that we cannot confirm. Have a look at the product photo for the shape. Would you like to know exactly whether the house fits your enclosure, or how big the entrance is? Then just get in touch. We will check it for you before you order.
A house works best when it really becomes part of the enclosure. Place it on or half buried in a deep layer of Zooply bedding. Your pet can then dig underneath and around it, and the house feels like a burrow in the ground. Put a handful of Zooply nesting material inside or next to the house. Your rat, hamster, mouse or gerbil will drag it in and build a soft nest. Place the house in a quiet spot, not directly under the water bottle and not in the middle of a busy route.
How many houses do you need? Provide at least one hiding place per animal, and preferably one extra. A hamster always lives alone, but it likes having several hiding places so it can choose where to sleep. Rats, mice and gerbils live in groups. For them it is important to have enough spots, so an animal that wants some rest can withdraw without squabbles. So feel free to combine the Teaky house with other hiding places, such as cork, tunnels or a piece of wood. Scatter some hay or dried herbs around the entrance, and it becomes a place to sniff around too. Rats like to sleep snuggled up together and sometimes carry a treat to their house. For rats, place the house on the floor or on a sturdy level, so everyone can reach it easily. Do you keep rats? Then also have a look at our rats section.
Leave the house in place as much as possible when you clean the enclosure. A hamster gets stressed when its nest and food store keep disappearing. Only remove dirty or wet nesting material and leave the rest. Rodents gnaw on their furnishings, and that is normal. Check the house now and then. If it is badly damaged or very dirty, replace it with a new one.
Back Zoo Nature does not list dimensions on the product page. Get in touch with us if you would like to know the size before ordering.
That depends on the size of the house and the entrance. A Syrian hamster must be able to get in and out easily and turn around inside. Just ask us if you are unsure.
Yes, that actually works well. Place it on or half in a deep layer of bedding, so your pet can dig around it. Make sure it stands firmly.
Gnawing is normal behaviour. Replace the house once it is badly damaged or dirty.
At least one per animal, and preferably one extra. With a group of rats, mice or gerbils several spots are important to prevent squabbles.
