Round, hollow cork trunk of approx. Ø 15 x 9-15 cm. A natural hideout to sleep in and climb on for dwarf hamsters, mice and gerbils. Read more.
A hollow tree trunk is the most natural hideout there is for small rodents. The Trunkhut from Back Zoo Nature is exactly that: a round, hollow trunk of natural cork. Your pet can crawl inside to sleep, and climb on top to look around. Cork is light, feels warm and has a rough texture that small feet grip well. Cork is harvested from the cork oak without felling the tree. The bark then grows back.
This Small measures about Ø 15 cm and is 9 to 15 cm high. That is a size for the smaller rodents. Dwarf hamsters, such as the Campbell's, the Winter White and the Roborovski, fit in well. Mice and gerbils also like to use it as a sleeping spot. For a Syrian hamster, rat or degu the Small is too tight. They are better off with the Medium of about Ø 20 cm. Every trunk is unique, so shape and thickness vary per piece.
In a rodent enclosure, you use the Trunkhut loose on the floor. The screw and wing nut are intended for bird cages and you usually will not need them here. Lay the trunk on its side to create a tunnel, or stand it upright as a hollow tower. Press it slightly into a deep layer of Zooply bedding for hamsters. Your dwarf hamster will naturally dig a tunnel towards it. That makes the hideout feel even safer. A cork trunk is also a popular element in hamster scaping, together with branches, moss and hay.
Place some Zooply nesting material next to the opening. Your hamster or mouse will drag it inside and build its nest. Mice and gerbils live in groups. In that case, provide several hideouts, so there is always a spot available. A dwarf hamster is best kept alone, but it likes to choose between a few sleeping spots. When cleaning, leave the nest in the Trunkhut alone as much as possible. Only remove wet or dirty parts.
Cork may be gnawed. That is normal, and gerbils in particular love to shred it. Replace the trunk when the wall becomes too thin or large pieces are missing. If the cork has become wet, let it dry thoroughly before putting it back. Loose cork shavings can simply stay in the bedding.
