Dried lichen moss with small twigs, approx. 50 grams. For a natural enclosure: as a top layer to sniff through and as decoration around wood and hideouts. Read more.
Would you like an enclosure that looks like a piece of forest? Then moss is a lovely addition. This branch moss is dried lichen moss with small twigs still attached. It instantly gives the enclosure a green, natural look. But it is more than decoration. Rodents and rabbits love to sniff through it, drag bits around and search between it for something tasty. It is part of the Discovery Bedding line by Back Zoo Nature, designed to encourage natural foraging behaviour.
Use the moss as part of hamster scaping. Scatter a tuft as a top layer on a deep layer of Zooply bedding. Place it against a piece of wood, around a hideout or at the entrance of a tunnel. That creates a natural transition between floor and furnishings. Sprinkle a few Zooply snacks or some seeds in between, and your hamster will start searching by itself. With gerbils and degus it works the same way, but for degus only choose sugar-free snacks and herbs.
Back Zoo Nature describes the moss as suitable for rodents and rabbits. With hamsters, mice and gerbils you will see that they also work it into their nest. That is natural behaviour: in the wild, animals pick moss to build a nest. Rats and degus love sniffing through it. For rabbits you can put a tuft in the run or near the hay as something new to explore. Hay does remain the most important thing for rabbits. The moss is an extra for variety.
The pack contains about 50 grams. Moss is light, so you can scatter it several times. It is better to add a little regularly than a lot at once. That keeps it new and interesting, and it gets dirty less quickly. Do not place it near the water bottle or water bowl, as wet moss soon turns musty. Because it is a natural product, the pieces vary in colour, size and shape.
Nibbling on the moss is normal. Replace it when it is dirty, damp or mostly chewed up. When cleaning, only remove the dirty spots. With hamsters, leave the food store and the nest alone as much as possible, as that causes less stress. Store any leftover moss dry and sealed.
Yes, that is natural behaviour. Many hamsters, mice and gerbils work moss into their nest. Remove it when it gets damp or dirty.
Back Zoo Nature lists rabbits as suitable. Offer it as enrichment in small tufts. Hay remains the main food of a rabbit.
About 50 grams of dried lichen moss with twigs. That is enough to scatter a tuft several times.
Use it as a top layer or decoration, not as the whole floor. A deep layer of regular bedding is still needed for digging and absorbing moisture.
According to Back Zoo Nature, the moss is completely natural and free of additives or chemicals.
