Natural piece of wood with holes and branches, approx. 20 to 35 cm. As a climbing element, resting spot and decoration in your rodent's enclosure. Every piece is unique. Read more.
An enclosure with just a hideout and a food bowl is quickly explored. Rodents want to climb, crawl, sniff and hide. Holewood helps you create space for that. It is a natural piece of wood with holes and branches. Your pet can crawl through it, climb over it, rest on it or duck into it for a moment. This gives the enclosure more structure, more routes and more sheltered spots. And it looks beautiful and natural too.
This Medium size measures about 20 to 35 cm. As it is a natural product, every piece has its own shape, colour and texture. No two pieces are the same. For a Syrian or dwarf hamster, it is a lovely piece to place in a tank and dig around. Gerbils and degus use it as a lookout and climbing object. For rats it is a fun extra element on the floor or a level, although they are big enough to mainly clamber over it. Fancy mice love disappearing into the holes.
The best way to use holewood is as part of hamster scaping: creating a natural layout. Place the wood half sunk into a deep layer of Zooply bedding. Your hamster or gerbil will dig tunnels underneath, and the wood becomes a sturdy roof over its burrow. Combine it with cork, moss, pine cones or dried flowers for a real landscape. Position the wood so it lies firmly and cannot tip over when your pet digs underneath. Press it well into the bedding.
Use the holes for foraging too. Scatter a few seeds or a small treat into the holes of the wood. Your pet will smell it straight away and go looking. With mice and rats, which live in groups, spread the treats out so everyone finds something. For degus and dwarf hamsters, only use sugar-free seeds or herbs. Move the wood to a new spot now and then when you clean the enclosure, but preferably leave the hamster's nest itself alone.
Rodents gnaw, and they will put their teeth into this wood too. That is normal. Their teeth grow throughout their lives, and gnawing on natural material is part of their behaviour. Remove small pieces or wood splinters if they end up in the nest. If the wood is heavily gnawed, dirty or wet, replace it. Brush it clean in between and keep it dry in the enclosure.
