A handful of grass can keep a pet busy for a whole evening. Your hamster drags it to its nest, your mice pull it apart and your gerbils work it into their tunnels. Palm Grass by Back Zoo Nature is dried palm grass made for exactly that kind of activity. Use it as a top layer on the bedding, as material for building a nest and as a place to hide snacks. It also gives the enclosure a lovely natural look.
The palm grass is part of the Discovery Bedding line. That line is designed to encourage natural behaviour, such as foraging and nest building. In the wild, rodents and rabbits use grass and leaves to make a nest and to search for food. With palm grass they can do the same in their enclosure. Back Zoo Nature describes it as completely natural, free from additives and chemicals. A bag contains approx. 40 grams. As it is a natural product, the pieces vary in colour, size and shape.
For hamster scaping, scatter the palm grass over a deep digging layer. Put some by the entrance of a hideout or around a piece of wood. If you want your hamster to build a nest with it, place a small bunch near its sleeping spot, next to some Zooply nesting material. It will choose what it likes best. Mice, gerbils and degus do the same. Rats like to drag it to their hammock or hideout. For rabbits, put a small bunch in the run or on a layer of Zooply bedding for rabbits, as something new to sniff around in. Hay remains the most important thing for rabbits, though.
Now and then, scatter a few snacks or seeds in between. That turns the palm grass into a foraging spot too. For degus and dwarf hamsters, only use sugar-free snacks and herbs. It is better to add a little regularly than a lot at once. That keeps it exciting and it gets dirty less quickly. Nibbling on the grass is normal.
Do not put the palm grass near the water bottle or water bowl, as wet material quickly turns musty. Remove dirty or damp bits when you clean. With hamsters, leave the nest alone as much as possible, even if palm grass has been worked into it. Replace it when it is dirty or mostly used up. Store what is left dry and closed.
Yes. Back Zoo Nature calls palm grass a popular material for nest building. Put a small bunch near its sleeping spot.
Back Zoo Nature lists rabbits as suitable. Offer it as enrichment in small bunches. Hay remains a rabbit's main food.
About 40 grams. That is enough to scatter a small bunch several times.
Use it as a top layer, not as the whole floor. A deep layer of regular bedding is still needed for digging and absorbing moisture.
Palm grass consists of long strands. These are handy for building a nest. Leaves are mainly a rustling layer to search in. You can also combine the two.
Knaagplaza is the online shop of 't Knaagplein in Bodegraven, a store specialised in rodents and rabbits. In our own enclosures we like to use natural materials, because animals clearly do more with them. That is why we choose materials such as this palm grass. Combine it with Zooply, our own brand, for the bedding, nesting material and snacks.
