The name spiderwood suits its shape. The wood has long, thin branches running in every direction, a bit like the legs of a spider. In an enclosure that instantly creates an exciting landscape. There are routes to climb over, branches to crawl under and spots to sit out of sight for a while. For an active rodent that is far more fun than an empty floor. Every piece is different, with its own shape, colour and branching.
This is size Large, about 45 to 60 cm. That is a big piece of wood. Back Zoo Nature describes it as suitable as a climbing element, resting spot and natural decoration in a rodent enclosure. Thanks to the branched shape your pet gets extra routes, height differences and sheltered spots. It is also a great base to build the rest of the enclosure around.
Be honest with yourself about the space you have. A piece of 45 to 60 cm only fits well in a spacious tank, a large bin cage or a roomy cage. That is where it really shines. Rats and degus are true climbers and get a lot out of a big branch like this. A Syrian hamster in a large enclosure, or a group of gerbils in a spacious gerbilarium, will happily scramble over it and hide underneath. For a dwarf hamster or mice in a smaller enclosure this size is too big. There would be too little free floor left, so choose a smaller piece instead.
Position the wood so it stands firmly and cannot tip when your pet climbs on it. Let a few branches rest in the bedding so the whole piece is stable. For rats you can also use it as a bridge between the floor and a level. For degus and gerbils a deep layer of Zooply bedding for degus works well, so they can dig under the branches. Hang or tuck some hay between the branches, so they have to search and climb to reach it. More natural decoration is available in our hamster scaping category.
Your pet may chew on the wood, that is part of the deal. Degus and rats in particular can work through thin twigs quickly. Check regularly for sharp points and make sure the wood is still stable. If too much has been chewed away, replace it.
About 45 to 60 cm. As it is a natural product, shape and size differ per piece.
Measure your enclosure first. This piece is meant for spacious tanks and large cages. After placing it, there should still be plenty of free floor to run and dig.
Yes, rats love to climb and get a lot out of the branches. You can also use it as a climbing route up to a level.
Let several branches rest on the floor and press them slightly into the bedding. Check that it does not wobble when you press on it gently.
The wood itself is not the problem, the size is. In a smaller enclosure it takes up too much space. A smaller piece works better there.
