Small rodents sleep for a large part of the day. They want to do so in a place where they feel safe: dark, sheltered and with only one entrance to keep an eye on. The Villa Coconut is just such a place. It is a hideout made of a real, hollowed-out coconut, with the outer husk still around it. Your pet can crawl inside to sleep, hide or build a nest. The rough, unprocessed coconut shell instantly gives the enclosure a natural look.
The coconut measures about 20 x 14 x 16 cm, with an opening of about 8 cm in diameter. Every coconut is 100% natural, so sizes may vary slightly. Back Zoo Nature describes the hideout as suitable for small rodents such as mice, small rats, dwarf and Syrian hamsters and gerbils. For mice, dwarf hamsters and gerbils it is a roomy hideout. A Syrian hamster fits in it well, although a large adult Syrian may find it a bit snug. So offer it a second, larger hideout as well. Adult rats are too big for this hideout. For young or small rats it is a fun spot.
The hideout comes with a screw and wing nut. Use them to hang it on the bars of a cage, for example as a sleeping spot up high for mice or young rats. For hamsters and gerbils it often works better on the floor. Place the coconut in a deep layer of Zooply bedding, or bury it halfway. That creates a burrow that connects to the tunnels your pet digs itself. Put a tuft of Zooply nesting material by the entrance. Your pet will drag it inside and build a soft nest.
Mice and gerbils live in groups. In that case, provide several hideouts so nobody feels pushed out. A good rule is at least one hideout per animal, ideally one extra. Combine the coconut with a few other hideouts, tunnels or pieces of wood. That way each animal has its own spot, and they can still sleep together if they want to.
The sturdy coconut shell with husk lasts a long time and is safe to gnaw on. So gnawing is normal. When cleaning out, only remove dirty or wet nesting material and perishable food. Leave a hamster's food stash in place as much as possible, as that gives peace of mind. If the coconut has been gnawed a lot or can no longer be cleaned, replace it.
