A flat floor with a house on it is quick to set up. For your pet, though, it is not very exciting. In the wild, rodents live among roots, stones and fallen branches. They climb over them, crawl underneath and look around from a higher spot. A piece of moorwood brings that back. This natural wood has an irregular shape full of curves and knobs, which naturally creates height differences and sheltered spots in the enclosure.
This is size Medium, about 30 to 40 cm long. Every piece has its own shape, colour and texture, so yours will look different from the one in the photo. Back Zoo Nature describes the wood as suitable as a resting spot, climbing element and natural decoration in a rodent enclosure. Your pet uses it to sit on, to walk across and to explore its surroundings. The wood also gives the enclosure more structure. It becomes a clear focal point to build moss, hay or a hideout around.
At 30 to 40 cm this is a medium sized piece. It fits well in a spacious tank or a cage with a large floor area. For a Syrian hamster, a pair of gerbils or degus it is a nice size to climb on and hide under. Rats like to use it as a lookout on the floor, and mice can easily scramble across it. Do you have a smaller enclosure or a dwarf hamster? Then a smaller piece is often more practical, so there is enough free space left to run.
Place the wood so it lies firmly and cannot tip. A piece that sits slightly in the bedding is usually the most stable. A deep layer of Zooply bedding around it lets your pet dig a little burrow underneath. Put a handful of hay in a hollow or under an overhanging part, and it often becomes a favourite resting spot. You can also combine the moorwood with cork, branches and moss from our hamster scaping category. Change the layout now and then. Your pet will enjoy exploring its home all over again.
Rodents gnaw on wood. That is normal and allowed. Check now and then for sharp edges. If the piece is heavily chewed or has become dirty, replace it. Loose dirt can be brushed off while dry.
About 30 to 40 cm. Every piece is unique, so the exact size and shape vary.
Lay it on its widest side and press it slightly into the bedding. That way it stays put. Do not stack loose pieces of wood into tall towers.
Yes, in a spacious enclosure this is a nice size for a Syrian hamster to climb on and hide under.
Moorwood is a natural product. Colour, shape and texture are different for every piece.
Definitely. Cork, moss, branches and hay go well with it. That way you create a varied and natural enclosure.
